The case
Wambui, the owner of Umoja Children’s Home, faced an ongoing challenge with the high cost of cooking fuel. With over 40 children and workers to feed, she was spending around 780 USD per month on LPG, which barely lasted 3 days.
When LPG became too expensive, she turned to charcoal and firewood, but these too proved costly and led to respiratory issues, especially for the younger and sickly children in her care.
The solution
Looking for a more sustainable and affordable solution, Wambui installed a Sistema 20 biogas system, along with a full biogas kit and a modified cooking area to accommodate biogas use.
This solution has drastically improved the situation for Wambui and her family, as well as the children under her care.
Now, Wambui can cook all meals for her family and workers using biogas, eliminating the need for LPG, charcoal, or firewood.
This has resulted in significant savings of around 950 USD per month. The money saved on energy has allowed her to reinvest into her farm, buying additional animals like chickens, which are sold for meat and eggs, providing extra income.

Additionally, the system produces biofertilizer, which eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers. Wambui collects between 400 and 540 liters of biofertilizer daily, which is used to enhance her farm’s productivity and helps grow vegetables for her kitchen and the community. The surplus vegetables are sold for even more income, further boosting the farm’s economic sustainability.
Thanks to the biogas system, Wambui enjoys up to 13 hours of cooking time daily, equivalent to 86 kg of LPG per month, which was previously a major cost.
This transformation has allowed her to save approximately KES 100,000 each month, which she uses to cater to the various needs of her home and the children she cares for.
This sustainable solution has not only provided economic relief but also educated the children in the home about clean cooking from a young age, empowering them for a healthier future.
