Lendahand and Sistema.bio: Social Enterprises helping each other

A little over two years ago, a young Dutch startup approached us with a proposition: Let us source your debt via an online crowd hungry for social and economic returns. What’s more, it will be at a better rate than you’ll get almost anywhere else. Needless to say, we were intrigued. We quickly learned about the triple-win they were after. For the European investors, eager for compelling risk/return profiles, the platform would let them bet on high-growth, high-impact companies. For social enterprises, this would unlock capital that is too often scarce and prohibitively expensive. And finally, for Lendahand, this would allow the company to prove a breakthrough model to connect people from different worlds through finance.

Since that moment, Sistema.bio has successfully fundraised 9 separate campaigns, ranging from 100,000 to 300,000 EUR in short and medium term working capital. Each one tells a specific story – usually buying raw materials to transform them into our industry leading biodigesters, and then sending them across an ocean (or two) from Mexico to awaiting smallholder farmers in Eastern Africa, South America or India. Thanks to the amazing work of the Lendahand marketing team, the campaigns fund in a matter of days.

Lendahand is now searching for more capital themselves to grow the platform. In the midst of COVID19, it couldn’t be a more important moment. If you’re interested, you’ll need to be quick. At last check, over 60% of their EUR 1.0m equity campaign was already funded. You can check it out here.

In trying times, there are few things that give me as much satisfaction as watching social enterprises help each other. We are – by definition – an innovative group willing to take risks where others are not, in complex markets that are in constant change. We can continue to solve difficult social problems given the chance.
