Carbon Credits at Sistema.bio
For the past two years the Sistema.bio team has been working on carbon credit registration for our hubs in Kenya, India and Mexico. Here’s where we are now:
- Kenya: In 2021 we achieved Gold Standard certification for the carbon credits generated from our Kenyan operations and are selling these through an established reseller, South Pole.
- Mexico: We have started the process of registering the carbon credits generated from our Mexican operations in Gold Standard, achieving project listing and validation and on track to receive full certification by Q1 2022.
- India: Sistema.bio India currently provides technology and training for an implementation partner who has fully registered their program under Gold Standard. We have also started our own Gold Standard registration process!
Official launch of our factory: World’s largest pre-fabricated biogas plant manufacturing unit!
October 2021 marked the official launch of our factory in Pune, a moment that we had all been waiting for! The aim of the launch was to generate awareness about Sistema.bio as a leading biogas plant manufacturing organization in India, and to inform our stakeholders about our factory, the world’s largest prefabricated biogas plant manufacturing unit!
The launch was planned with two events: one for media wherein journalists from leading newspapers and magazines were invited; and the other one was for our partners and customers to showcase our factory.
As you all know, Sistema.bio India commenced operations in 2018 and within a span of 4 years, we have opened our own production facility with a capacity to produce 30,000 digesters every year! Kudos to the leadership team and the entire Sistema.bio India team for making this happen!
Sistema.bio India: A year of growth
In 2020, Sistema.bio India was composed of 92 employees. By the end of 2021 it is a team of 200 people that, through hard work and perseverance, sold 10,000 biodigesters in one year! We are now serving in 17 states across India, and over 19,000 Indian families are using our biodigester technology.
While our Production team started manufacturing in January 2021, they met immense challenges in the form of lockdowns induced due to COVID-19. Despite the setbacks, the Production team managed to produce a whopping 10,000 biodigesters and delivered them across India and Africa. In December, the team produced 2,200 digesters, the highest monthly output in the year.
Sistema.bio Kenya: Record breakers
2021 was a big year for Sistema.bio Kenya, with several records broken. Not only did we achieve a 35% growth in units sold —with more than 200 sales per month in November and December—, but we also reached the highest customer satisfaction rate in the history of Sistema.bio Kenya! According to our Customer Satisfaction Report,
- 90% of our clients in Kenya are happy with their Sistema.bio products
- 86% of our clients are happy with our staff and how the team has handled their issues
- Our Net Promoter Score for August 2021 was 86%!
We are always proud to see our teams’ results, but seeing the effect their efforts & commitment have on our clients is the biggest reward!
Sistema.bio in Africa
For years we have known that our prefabricated technology and our adaptable business model are the perfect combo for scalability, and the past couple of years have proven just how far we can go. We have been working on new partnerships for a while now, and are happy to see our network grow across latitudes. Last year, for example, Ecogen Bioenergy joined us as official distributors in Malawi, having installed over 30 systems already!
As Sistema.bio grows, we are searching for more partners in East and Southern Africa -we even had our very first African Distributors webinar in December!
Expanding out territory: Sistema.bio distributors
We began operations in Mexico over 10 years ago with the goal of bringing clean energy solutions to small farmers in the country, a goal that has grown over the years. In 2021, through our team in Colombia and our distributors in Latin America and the Caribbean, we managed to impact more than 261 farmers in Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
We believe and know that partnerships help us magnify our impact, so in 2021 we started a project of distributors within the Mexican Republic. At the end of the year, we have 9 distributors in the states of Tlaxcala, Estado de México, Hidalgo, Aguascalientes, Querétaro, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Veracruz. In total, our Mexican distributors sold 54 biodigesters in 2021.
Sanitation, sustainable energy and food security in the Yucatan Peninsula
In 2021 we met our goal of installing 500 biodigesters in the Yucatan Peninsula as part of the food sovereignty project carried out in collaboration with IRRI Mexico and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
In addition to the installation of the new biodigesters and the monitoring of those previously installed, specific projects were carried out for technical training and sustainable agricultural practices promoting the participation of women, with practical workshops on Trainer Training and Community Gardening.
In addition, adoption was evidenced by evaluations that qualitatively and quantitatively reflected the use of our technology.
Gender at Sistema.bio
As an organization focused on innovation and impact, Sistema.bio has inherently operated with an eye on gender inclusion, impacting women as farmers and end-users of our biogas digesters as well as women in our workforce. In recent years, however, we have increased our strategic efforts to recruit, hire, retain, and advance women within the company, both in leadership and the workforce, becoming an industry leader in the area of gender inclusion.
In 2021, Value for Women created a report with the support of EEP Africa on our gender policies, as well as how the women in our team generate further impact for female farmers. You can find the full report on our Downloads & Resources.
