Scaling Biogas in Ethiopia

On 21 April 2026, Sistema.bio joined SNV Ethiopia, government representatives, implementation partners, farmers and sector stakeholders in Addis Ababa to reflect on the progress of the Ethiopia Biogas Programme and strengthen collaboration for the next phase of implementation.

The gathering highlighted how much has already been achieved through the programme over the past two years. Implemented through a partnership between Sistema.bio, SNV Ethiopia and local partners, the programme is helping dairy farmers transform organic waste into clean biogas for cooking and nutrient-rich organic fertiliser for their farms.

Approximately 500 biodigesters have already been installed, reaching an estimated 2000 people. By the end of the programme, partners aim to install more than 1,600 systems and benefit over 6,000 smallholder farmers across Ethiopia.

Beyond the numbers, the programme is demonstrating what it takes to scale biogas adoption in a new context. Success depends not only on technology, but also on strong partnerships, farmer engagement and solutions designed around local realities.

One example is Sistema.bio’s ongoing development of a biogas-powered injera stove, designed specifically for Ethiopian households. By adapting clean energy solutions to local cooking practices, the programme is helping ensure adoption can happen without compromising tradition.

The programme is advancing at a time of growing national momentum around clean cooking and climate-smart agriculture. Bringing stakeholders together in Addis Ababa provided an opportunity to share lessons, align priorities and reaffirm a collective commitment to expanding access to practical, farmer-centred climate solutions.

As implementation continues, the Ethiopia Biogas Programme remains focused on improving livelihoods, strengthening farm productivity and demonstrating how clean energy and regenerative agriculture can work hand in hand to create lasting impact.
