Sistema.bio CEO Alex Eaton Advocates for Biogas Solutions at Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa

Alex Eaton, CEO of Sistema.bio, participated in the opening plenary of the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa, held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on May 14, 2024. Speaking to over 1,000 delegates, including 55 government delegations and four Heads of State, Eaton emphasized the role of smallholder and family farmers in advancing clean cooking through biogas technology.

Eaton highlighted Sistema.bio’s leadership as the leading global biogas company for farmers and announced a goal to install over 300,000 biodigesters by 2030, which will mobilize $200 million in investment and co-investment with farmers.

The Summit, convened by the International Energy Agency (IEA), aimed to elevate clean cooking on the global agenda, mobilize financial commitments, and develop strategies for scaling efforts.

“Let’s not forget that we need to keep food security and smallholder farmers on the agenda when we talk about clean cooking,” Eaton concluded. By using biodigesters, we can produce clean cooking fuels while also generating sustainable fertilizers.

The Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa marked a pivotal moment, bringing together global leaders to forge a path towards universal clean cooking access, with a special focus on the continent’s most vulnerable populations.

Sistema.bio Launches Second Phase of India Dairy Biogas Program

Starting the second quarter of 2024 on a high note, Sistema.bio India has kicked off the second phase of its India Dairy Biogas Program. Under this program, 12,000 biodigesters will be installed across key states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar by August 2024. These biodigesters, ranging from 2 to 30 cubic meters, will be provided to smallholder farmers at affordable prices.

The program seeks to empower countless farmers with clean energy, reducing their dependence on fossil fuels and chemical fertilizers. As a result, farmers will enjoy greater economic stability and contribute to environmental sustainability. The second phase builds on the momentum of the first, which successfully concluded in March 2024 with the installation of 37,500 units.

Looking ahead, Sistema.bio India plans to scale up the program further, aiming to install a total of 50,000 units in the near future. This expansion highlights Sistema.bio India’s commitment to climate action and empowering rural communities across India.

Sistema.bio India Collaborates with MNRE to Bring Modern Biogas Technology to Assam

March 2024, marked a monumental step for Sistema.bio India as we launched our first project in collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The project aims  to install 400 Sistema 6 biodigesters, each with a capacity of 2 cubic meters, across 102 districts in lower Assam. The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Purbi Dairy are providing crucial implementation support for this initiative.

Funded under the National Biogas Programme, this initiative utilizes MNRE’s central financial assistance to make biodigesters accessible to smallholder farmers at affordable prices. By providing clean energy solutions, the project is set to revolutionize  the lives of farmers in Assam, enabling them to become energy independent and enhance their agricultural productivity through the utilization of organic fertilizers.

As Sistema.bio India continues to innovate and expand its reach, this collaboration establishes a promising precedent for future endeavors aimed at promoting the widespread adoption of modern biogas technology throughout the country.

Sistema.bio and I.T.C Launch Biogas Project in Bihar and West Bengal

In April 2024, Sistema.bio India and I.T.C launched a new project to install 100 biodigesters across 10 districts in West Bengal and Bihar. The project is funded under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s central financial assistance with additional financial support from I.T.C’s dairy division.

The combined financial support from the government and I.T.C substantially reduces the cost of biodigesters, making them affordable for farmers. The primary goal of the project is to promote the adoption of modern biogas technology, helping farmers reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, LPG, and chemical fertilizers.

The project not only focuses on the current installations but also envisions scaling up to cover more regions across the country in the future. This initiative highlights Sistema.bio India’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, striving to provide modern biogas solutions that empower farmers and contribute to a greener, more prosperous India.

Sistema.bio Strengthens Partnership with CARE International in Honduras

During this past quarter, we have seen significant momentum towards inter-institutional collaboration in Central America and the Caribbean. A prime example is the partnership between Sistema.bio and CARE International Honduras, supported by Alteco as a commercial partner in this country. In Honduras, the CARE10x pilot program has been launched as part of the Economic and Food Justice Program. The main objective is to work hand in hand with farmers to improve their agricultural practices and quality of life through circular economy models.

This innovative project includes the installation of biodigesters in five Honduran municipalities, benefiting 90 families and reaching 480 participants, including 245 women. Farmers will have access to high-quality biofertilizers to improve their crops, biogas as a renewable energy source for agricultural and domestic projects, and the opportunity to reduce firewood consumption, which helps prevent respiratory diseases.

Sistema.bio is committed to continuing to strengthen alliances with social enterprises, international organizations, and microfinance institutions to expand its network of biodigesters. This joint effort demonstrates the positive impact that can be achieved through strategic collaboration and a commitment to sustainable practices in Latin America.

Sistema.bio Launches its Carbon Program in Colombia

Titled ‘Biogas for the Field and Carbon for Colombia,’ this marks Sistema.bio’s first pilot program for multi-reactor systems in the company’s history. Over the next two months, installations will range from System 80 to System 400. The program offers significant benefits for partners and producers, including organic waste transformation, energy cost reduction, environmental protection contributions, and opportunities to engage in high-impact programs. It aims to capture over 60,000 tons of carbon emissions over five years.

The program is part of efforts to mitigate carbon emissions and promote sustainable practices in Colombia. Training for technicians and implementers has already begun to evaluate program viability, identify improvement opportunities, and make necessary adjustments before scaling up. Stay tuned for more updates on this program!
