Giving men a seat in the kitchen with biogas

blog, sistemabio, famer

Samuel, a well-known retired teacher, has his Sistema.bio digester and home located in Kirura Village in Kiambu County. He is a coffee farmer and actively supports his wife in dairy farming. “I am a Kenyan and specifically a coffee farmer,” Samuel describes himself with a smile while he cooks with biogas.

Currently, men cannot cook using firewood as it is considered a woman’s role and that women have mastered the work. “They can only cook on it if there is a lot of problem,”- Samuel says. When the wife was away he would resort to eating cold food or going out to eat at a neighboring restaurant. A situation that wasn’t pleasant especially after the tiring farm activities.

All this has changed now as just besides his cow shed stands a Sistema.bio digester. It is perfectly maintained by a worker who has been trained on the daily maintenance routines and the unit is complete with feeding and outlet tanks, pressure relief valve and the gas pipe.  The digester is always filled with biogas and therefore Samuel decided to share it with his son who is an immediate neighbor. At the outlet section, the rich organic fertilizer naturally flows uninterrupted. “This fertilizer is my coffee gold mine, the results I see so far keeps me eager for this year’s yield,”- says Samuel.

The convenience and empowerment that comes with it, is the reason why Samuel likes Sistema.bio digester a lot. “If my wife is away, I can cook by myself with biogas, it is easily and quickly with no smoke and no firewood cutting nor charcoal dirt,”- says Samuel. He has also seen benefits on cost savings as he has saved over KES 20000 on cooking energy alone from using Sistema.bio digester over the last year. Its installation is also very fast and low cost. “You only dig a 1.2m deep hole, no cement, sand or gravel needed and installation is completed within 3 hours.”- Samuel’s son adds.

Samuel contends that he made a great decision to adopt Sistema.bio. Now his family has enough fertilizer and biogas energy for cooking and he can eat good and hot food even if the wife is away.
