Harnessing Biodigester Technology for a Zero Emissions Future

Founded in 2010, Sistema.bio was built on three powerful ideas: First, that biodigester technology profoundly impacts the health, well-being, and productivity of smallholder farmers. Second, that this technology can significantly reduce methane and CO2 emissions from farming practices, and these reductions can be quantified and turned into carbon credits under the Clean Development Mechanism. Finally, that carbon markets could provide the necessary funding to develop and deploy biodigesters for farmers worldwide.

Now, more than a decade later, the urgency of climate change has only intensified, threatening global ecosystems, food systems, and communities. As we face these challenges, it’s clear that we must accelerate our efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. There are numerous strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and capture carbon, ranging from government regulations to private initiatives and international trade agreements. Among these, carbon markets have emerged as a proven mechanism for financing projects that reduce carbon emissions and foster technological advancements.

One of the recent advancements in this arena is the release of the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) in 2023 by the Integrity Council for Voluntary Carbon Markets (ICVCM). These principles, developed through extensive consultations with industry experts, NGOs, and other stakeholders, establish a minimum threshold for what constitutes a “high-quality” carbon credit. With these principles in place, Multi-Stakeholder Working Groups are now tasked with reviewing specific carbon project categories and methodologies, including household biogas projects like those supported by Sistema.bio.

The CCPs evaluate the quality of carbon credits on three levels: Governance, Emissions Impact, and Sustainable Impact. These principles include several key requirements that ensure the integrity and effectiveness of carbon credits. For Sistema.bio, these principles are more than just guidelines, they are a blueprint for scaling up our efforts to deploy biodigesters globally and make a meaningful impact on climate change.

While many carbon credit projects focus solely on emissions reduction, they often overlook the socio-economic benefits they can deliver. At Sistema.bio, we take a different approach. Our carbon projects are designed not only to meet the highest quality standards but also to generate a wide range of shared value by advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This unique combination offers businesses an opportunity to invest in carbon credits that contribute to their decarbonization strategies while creating tangible, positive impacts. Through our high-quality projects, we demonstrate the potential of biogas—a clean, carbon-negative, and decentralized energy source that farmers can use today. By collaborating with companies and institutions across both the private and public sectors, we empower and leverage authentic commitment to climate action.

As we continue to grow and innovate, we remain committed to our core values, ensuring that our projects deliver measurable climate benefits, adhere to the highest standards of integrity, and contribute to a just transition to a net-zero world. Together, we can make Zero Emissions Day not just a moment of reflection, but a catalyst for action.
